Join us on the 37th annual Chilly Hilly ride, Sunday, Feb. 28.

Join us on the 37th annual Chilly Hilly ride, Sunday, Feb. 28.

If you missed the Chilly Hilly  registration deadline, which was midnight on Wednesday, you can still register for the event on Sunday morning. Registration lines can take a bit of time, but some advance preparation on your part can help speed up the process.

Complete a registration form in advance. Print the PDF at home, fill it out and bring it to the start.

Bring exact change. Having $35 in cash at the Seattle start line (tents located under the Viaduct across from the ferry terminal) or $30 at the Bainbridge start (at B.I. Cycle shop) will expedite the process. Current members in good standing can subtract $5.

Bring a credit card. Have your credit card in-hand, and we’ll get you through a line quickly.

Fill in your check before you arrive. Just like grocery shopping, no one likes to wait in line behind someone who waits to fill out their check once they hear the total. Make your personal check out to Cascade Bicycle Club in the amount of $35 (Seattle start line) or $30 (Bainbridge start line.) Current members in good standing can subtract $5.

Join the club. OK, this won’t speed up the lines on Sunday, but you will enjoy the benefit of event fee discounts while knowing that you’ve made an investment in improving cycling across the region. You can add a membership to the Chilly Hilly registration form, or you can join online today.

Thanks for your support and have a great Chilly Hilly!

Designing Public Spaces for People—and Bikes

Thursday, February 25th, 2010 by John Mauro

helle-gehlBetter bike commuting in Seattle would benefit greatly from a downtown make-over.  Better public spaces, connectivity and priority for active transportation would make biking safer, more popular and more fun.  Cascade participated in a lively discussion centering on the recent results of the Public Space/Public Life study by Gehl Architects—the first project of its kind in the United States.

Helle Søholt, Gehl Architects managing partner, was on hand to kick off the discussion with a few dozen planners, developers, and decision-makers.  A few interesting points that piqued my interest:

  • The creation of a great space downtown is hindered by an “incomplete bicycle network” (I bet you already knew that)
  • In cities like Copenhagen, investment from private land-owners and developers in making a more livable streetscape—think more greenery, fewer cars and abundant sidewalk cafes—is routinely ten times the amount of money the city puts in.
  • New York’s recent pilot project in Times Square (a Gehl Architects project) saw 17% better traffic flow and over 10% more pedestrians—and cut collisions by far more than 50%.  So wait: reclaim public right of way for people and safety, livability and better traffic flow?  I think Seattle’s ripe for such an experiment.

Stay tuned, as this discussion is just beginning and may generate promising momentum to improve the street environment for current and future bicycle commuters.

THIS WEEKEND: Seattle Bike Swap & Chilly Hilly

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010 by M.J. Kelly

Set your alarm early to score great deals at Saturday’s 14th annual Seattle Bike Swap. Doors open at 9, but people line up earlier (some as early as 7 a.m.) Bring deal-friendly cash as there is no ATM on-site. The 7-11 has one across the street, but you might lose out on those sweet rims in the meantime.

Head home with your haul and gear up for the 37th annual Chilly Hillyevent on Bainbridge Island on Sunday. If you haven’t pre-registered (still can until midnight tonight!), registration tents are open in Seattle (under the Viaduct across from the ferry terminal) from 7 to 10 a.m. and in Bainbridge from 7:30 – 10:30 a.m. Ferries depart from Seattle at 7:55, 8:45, 9:35 and 10:35 a.m. with your event bib acting as a ferry ticket.

At 33 miles, Chilly Hilly has one official food stop at mile 19.3, stocked to the brims with homemade cookies and hot cider. Be sure to bring a few extra dollars, too. The other stops along the route are fundraisers for a wonderful group of Bainbridge Island charities. Don’t miss the Finish Line Festival with fantastic chili feed to support the Squeaky Wheels Cycling Club.

The Chilly Hilly is a fundraiser for the Cascade Bicycle Club, a 501(c)4 organization. Cascade also donates to a number of Bainbridge Island nonprofits as a thanks for help and support on the event.

Keep it in the family

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010 by M.J. Kelly

family-feudClif Bar and REI are hosting a fun Family Feud style game show Saturday, March 13 at 4:45 at the Seattle Bicycle Expo. We’ll recreate the old classic show to test two families’ knowledge of bike safety, REI and Clif Bar related questions. No game show would be complete without fabulous prizes involved, for contestants and spectators.

You can be one of the lucky families to compete for prizes from REI & Clif. We are taking applications now! To apply, please email the names and ages of your “family” members (you don’t actually have to be related, friend groups are encouraged to apply) and the top three reasons why you should be the next contestants on Family Feud. So make it a point to attend the Saturday show for a guaranteed good time and free swag!

Three-bike racks on the way

Monday, February 22nd, 2010 by Chris Rule

Along with the news that bike loading is now permitted in both the Ride-Free Area and Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, here’s more encouraging news if you’d like to use the bus for part of your commute.

Ever wanted to mount your bike on the bus to help you go the distance, and there wasn’t enough room?  Are you intimidated by the thought of leaving your precious two-wheeled friend on the rack? SDOT Blog reports that Metro should finish retrofitting buses with three-bike racks this spring.  And they link to a handy video in case you need a little help using the contraption for the first time.

Missing Link — New hearing date

Missing Link slide show

On July 15, 2009, we learned that Cascade Bicycle Club and the City of Seattle are being sued by a coalition of Ballard industrial businesses, industrial associations and the Ballard Chamber of Commerce. The lawsuit is an appeal to the Superior Court and challenges the city’s plans to complete the “Missing Link” of the Burke-Gilman Trail. The project would improve traffic management and allow for improved safety and access for all users — pedestrians, bicycles, cars and trucks — through the corridor.

The original hearing before Judge Rodgers was originally scheduled for Monday, Feb. 22, but has been continued (read: delayed, but due to a different case) to Friday, March 5 at 9 a.m.

Stay tuned.

SB 5838 dies on Order of Consideration

Thursday, February 18th, 2010 by David Hiller

A bad hearing, followed by a mad scramble for signatures, followed by disingenuous fiscal note by the Office of Administrator of Courts, followed by egregious mismanagement of Senate floor sessions – including the need to revote time consuming and controversial bills – all conspired against the Vulnerable User bill. Despite broad support and the votes necessary for passage, the bill died in the Senate at cutoff on February 16.

Thank you to everyone who worked hard for the Vulnerable User Bill. You testified, you made phone calls, you emailed, you wrote letters. The issue won’t go away, and we made significant progress over last year, but that’s little comfort to the hundreds of families who will suffer grief and loss, and continue to ask: “Is this justice?”

Critical Deadline for Vulnerable User Bill

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010 by Chris Rule

The vulnerable user bill faces a critical deadline today, the cutoff date for bills to be passed by the Senate before traveling to the House.  Senate leaders are working frantically in the Capitol (and on TVW) to get their bills passed by this body so that they don’t “die.”

Because of the large volume of bills, we need Senate leaders to know that SB 5838 is a priority.

Do you have two minutes to call your senator’s office?  Please tell him or her how important it is to you that the Vulnerable User Bill move forward.  You may leave a message with a legislative aide or a voice mail.  Encourage your senator to ask leadership to bring SB 5838 to a vote on the Senate floor.

You can look up your state senator using this link.

Sen. Adam Kline chairs the Judiciary and has been particularly helpful in moving the bill forward, and Sen. Joe McDermott is the bill’s prime sponsor.   Please share your appreciation!  And if your senator is one of the bill’s other sponsors, please say thank you: Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, Sen. Darlene Fairley, Sen. Ed Murray, and Sen. Ken Jacobsen.
