As a biker and driver, I am all for safer streets, but who is the asshat that came up with the term 'road diet'? While I am for the concept, the term is divisive. The city and the pro-biking political engine need to be a little smarter in their tactics.

I think safer streets are very important: Ive been biking around Seattle for the past 6 months now, I wear a helmet, have reflective stickers on my bike, have flashing lights, and I obey all traffic signs as if I were a car as well, and I stay in my bike lane.

That being said, ive been hit by a car twice in the past 2 months. First time was on Eastlake. Second time was just 3 days ago in South Seattle near Rainier and MLK. The most recent accident almost hospitalized me. We need to do something about safer streets for cyclists, and more advocacy, because both times for me at least, the driver just kept on going..

The blog written by David Hiller stating that I oppose the Nickerson Street “road diet” is incorrect. I appreciate the opportunity to share my views with you directly and let you know what I am hearing from many people in the community.

I have not come out in opposition to the project. Yesterday, I discussed my concerns with Chuck Ayers the Cascade Bicycle Club president and Friday, I spoke to Blake Trask the chair of Seattle’s Bicycle Advisory Board.

During the past month I have received numerous messages opposing the Nickerson Street “road diet”. I have met with representatives of the freight and business community who oppose the project. Both the 36th District Democrats and Republicans have passed resolutions against the road diet. Representative Mary Lou Dickerson and Senator Jeanne Kohl-Welles have met with me because of their concerns. County Councilmember Larry Phillips and Representative Reuven Carlyle have also requested that I take a second look at the project.

I am also beginning to hear strong support for the proposed road diet. Many Cascade Bicycle Club members have expressed their support.
I indicated to both Chuck and Blake that I want to make sure that all individuals are heard and that the Council has all of the facts and is comfortable with the project moving forward.

Because of the strong views of individuals on both sides of this project and because numerous people have asked the Council to get involved, I requested the Seattle Department of Transportation to brief the City Council Transportation Committee on the project. The briefing is on June 8 at 9:30 AM in the City Council Chambers.

I appreciate hearing from the members of the Cascade Bicycle Club and looking forward to our continued conversation! Here is the Seattle Department of Transportation web site which provides information on the project: http://www.seattle.gov/transportation/nickerson.htm
