Let’s bike to work this Friday, shall we?

Monday, May 17th, 2010 by M.J. Kelly

Bike up and be counted! F5 Bike to Work Day is a great time to encourage your friends, family, neighbors and co-workers to give bicycling a try. They might be nervous, worried they can’t find a route or concerned that it’s too hard. By giving a helping hand, you can smooth a newbie’s nerves and open the door to new possibilities. Don’t believe me? Read on:

I had never ridden my bike to work before bike-to-work day last year. In fact, I didn’t even know how I was going to get from my house [in Bellevue] to my job [in Seattle]. However, I belong to Team Survivor Northwest, an exercise group for woman cancer survivors, and the TSNW program manager, sent us all an inspiring e-mail the day before bike-to-work day last year. She described her own fear and doubts the first time she tried biking to work. She mentioned the kiosks that are available on bike-to-work day so I looked it up and found there was one not too far from my home.

So last May 15th I got on my bike and rode to that kiosk hoping they would be able to tell me the best way to get to my work. The first person I talked to gave me a great map but didn’t seem to know the best route. But while I was getting my tires pumped and my seat adjusted by the bike maintenance volunteer I asked if he had ideas. He opened up the map I was given and described a fantastic route. It took me nearly two hours to get to work that first day, with all the stops to check the map, but you’d think I’d won the Tour de France by the smile of triumph on my face when I finally arrived at work that morning!

Who knows how many of use are out there commuting by bike thanks to someone’s encouragement? You, your words and your support could be just the thing that tips the balance in helping someone give it a try.

Bike to School month is so magical!

Monday, May 17th, 2010 by Elliott

We have 35 elementary schools participating in Bike to School month this May, and they are doing some pretty creative things to get everyone excited about biking! Check out these photos below, taken by Tim King, a parent at Bryant Elementary.

That’s the Bike Fairy (in this case, Leslie Loper, Bryant’s BTS coordinator), a mythical creature first created by Ellen Aagaard, a parent at Laurelhurst Elementary and a Cascade instructor. As Ellen explains it, “The bike fairy rides around the area of the school & tries to “catch” kids riding to school–if she/he catches you you get a little prize.” It was a great hit last week at Laurelhurst when Mr. Brown, the librarian, was the Bike Fairy. He rode a dirt bike and a black multi-sport helmet, and also sported giant pink wings!

Nancy Denney, at Ben Franklin Elementary in the  Lake Washington School District, has been using international biking photos (sent out to coordinators each week by yours truly!) to generate biking enthusiasm. She posts the photo each week on a Bike to School bulletin board with a list for kids to write down their guesses as to where the photo was taken. In the first week of May, Ben Franklin had over 300 riders. Keep up the good work!

New route through Portland this year

Friday, May 14th, 2010 by Erica Meurk
St. Johns Bridge

The view of St. John's Bridge from Cathedral Park in Portland

7/15 UPDATE: The route has changed. Please read this post for details.

This just in! Group Health STP riders will be be skipping downtown Portland this year (all seventeen stoplights of it), and making a grand entrance into the city via St. John’s Bridge.

Seasoned riders may remember the bridge from the STP routes in 1986 through 1989. We’re returning to it in 2010 because the Broadway Bridge, which has brought finishers into Portand for the last several years, will be under construction in July

The route adds a mere half-mile, and offers spectacular scenery with no railroad tracks, no trains, less traffic, and fewer stop lights – all welcome when you’ve spent nearly 200 miles in the saddle. Plus, crossing a majestic, Gothic suspension bridge seems a fitting way to end a self-propelled journey from Seattle to Portland, wouldn’t you say?

Happy training! We’ll see you at the finish line.

Green Bike™ Project 2.0 Participants Off and Rolling!

New commuters riding with confidence on West Marginal Way

New Green Bikers riding with confidence on West Marginal Way

Just in time for Bike Month, Cascade Bicycle Club has launched the Green Bike™ Project 2.0 and introduced bicycling as a form of commute transportation to 36 employees from southeast Seattle businesses and nonprofit organizations.

The Green Bike™ Project was first launched in 2009 in partnership with the Washington State Department of Transportation, King County Metro and REI. Brand new commuters from around the region were given a Novarra bicycle, instruction, and logistical and moral support towards a goal of reducing their drive-alone commute trips by 60 percent. 60 percent of 2009 participants achieved that goal and earned sole ownership of their Green Bike.

In 2010 Cascade took the lead and selected organizations from southeast Seattle to introduce the bicycle as commute transportation to a one specific community. The intrepid new participants are already out on their bikes and commuting to and from work in their communities – and people are noticing! Instructor Ray Whitlock reported that, “On my commute home today I saw and talked to a guy riding a Green Bike from downtown into West Seattle and on to his home in White Center. How cool is that?!”

Be on the lookout for Green Bikers working hard through “sweat equity” to transform their commute and earn that bike! Give them an encouraging smile and wave.

Of course, you’ll need 24.5 volunteer hours to get there, but here’s a great volunteer opportunity that will fulfill some hours.

2010 Trail Count Locations

2010 Trail Count Locations

Help us with the 2010 Burke Gilman and Sammamish River Trail Survey! This survey happens every five years and provides valuable data to support advocacy for new trails and bike facilities around the region.

Volunteers will be counting bicyclists and pedestrians at 7 different locations along the trails, and we need your help to fill volunteer shifts between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday May 22 and between 6 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 25.  If you’re available on either or both of these days, let us know.  We have over 100 shifts to fill!  Fill in your availability here.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Starting tonight, you can get delicious FREE, Neapolitan pizza just for riding your bike. Yes, you read that right. Starting tonight, Via Tribunali Neapolitan Pizzeria will host its “5@5″ campaign in conjunction with Peroni Beer and The Stranger to raise funds for the local biking community each Wednesday from 5 to 7.

When you ride your bike to the designated Via Tribunali Neapolitan Pizzeria (see list below the jump), you can score a free margherita pizza and $3 Peroni beers. The $3 purchase of Peroni will be donated to the biking community partner for that day.

TFKSeattle_Logo_CBCProgramOn Wednesday, May 26, it’s our turn as we feature the Trips for Kids Seattle program as the beneficiary. Trips for Kids Seattle takes area kids between the ages of 10 and 17 for three- to four-hour mountain bike adventures in the spring, summer and fall. All of the gear is provided: bikes, helmets, gloves, snacks and full water bottles. Kids learn trail etiquette, rules of riding, bike skills and an appreciation for the environment. To create a safe and meaningful experience, we restrict group sizes to 10 participants. At the end of each ride, the group reflects on the day and share what we have learned. Please bike with us us on Wednesday, May 26 to the Queen Anne Via Tribunali location for free pizza, then buy a Peroni to benefit Trips for Kids.

McGilvra Elementary rocks

Tuesday, May 11th, 2010 by Erica Hann

On Friday morning, while delivering and picking up the bikes for the Group Health Basics of Bicycling program, we stopped by McGilvra Elementary. I’m sure they were thrilled to have a P.E. class based on bicycling skills, but I doubt anyone new learned how to ride. I counted 87 bikes in the bike parking area! Take a look:

Ship Canal Trail closure this week

Monday, May 10th, 2010 by M.J. Kelly

Seattle Dept. of  Transportation has asked the contractor working on the Ship Canal Trail to make some final adjustments to the new extension of the Ship Canal Trail. The work will require closing the part of the trail that is between 6th Avenue West and 11th Avenue West, from today, Monday, May 10 to Friday, May 14.

The contractor will extend the fence and fix damaged concrete in the newly constructed section of the trail.

Trail users are asked to obey the signs and stay off this portion of the trail until the freshly poured concrete is cured.

Major Taylor Maintenance Party Gets Our Fleet Rolling

Friday, May 7th, 2010 by Emma Epstein

Thanks to a group of seven skilled volunteers, the Major Taylor Project’s fleet of Redline Conquests is ready to roll. The Project purchased these 30 bikes last spring so students who don’t own bikes could participate in the club.  Since then, students have ridden them on weekly rides, events like Flying Wheels and STP, and one very muddy cyclocross race. Our volunteers cleaned, tuned and sorted, and we’re excited for the bikes to hit the road with our spring riding clubs.
