I am not able to attend, but I wanted to comment on the replacement of Chuck Ayers. I think there is no dispute that Chuck made a huge contribution to the success of the Club and to cycling in the Northwest. But I would urge all members to let the Board complete the transition process and reserve judgment until it is complete. I do not question the dedication of the Board members who made the decision, and we elected them precisely to exercise their best judgment in decisions like this one. Simply because a decision is controversial or unpopular does not mean it is wrong.
I Kenny Hamm a.k.a. The Bicycle Doctor do here by completely 100% agree with David Hiller’s quote in the Stranger and believe Chuck Ayers made the right decision not to fire him. I also favor a recall of the Board of Directors. They are the ones out of touch.
Kenny,
Please follow these folks, http://bikeclubrescuesquad.org/, in order to support the recall of the current Board.

Kenny & Laura, I don’t know if it was the right thing to do to get rid of Chuck or not, but I am pretty confident that forming a splinter organization is only going to hurt the bicycle community. As we try to make Puget Sound a more bicycle-friendly place we have enough challenges ahead of us without dividing our efforts. Personally, I would like to see things go in the opposite direction. I would like to see CBC coordinating both events and lobbying efforts with organizations like the Bicycle Alliance of Washington, SIR, and the Redmond Bike Club. My suggestion is that if you have grievances, air them, but don’t do it by forming a new, separate organization…
Joe,
The link Laura posted was to a recall effort, not a splinter group. I am glad to see this is happening. Until a few weeks ago I was proud to be a member of Cascade. A lot of that has to do with David Hiller’s advocacy efforts. This whole dispute, and the disastrous way that Cascade is handling it, is making me question the board’s leadership.

After doing some more reading it looks like the election of two new board members has been postponed by four months. Why have members not heard about this? Why does Cascade have a blog and Facebook page and yet fail to post important news about the club?
The best coverage I’ve found is Erica Barnett’s in Publicola (which includes a clarification comment from Chuck Ayers himself): http://www.publicola.net/2010/10/22/cascade-bike-club-meeting/
The more I learn, the less confidence I have in this board.
