Regarding the "prodigal bicyclist" I was much like Tracy for many years especially when I had motorized transport. I've not had motorized transport since spring of 2002. It was my finding that riding the bike was more productive than not. When you have no other means of transport riding a bike even in inclement weather really makes sense. You can either walk in the rain, or wait for the bus in the rain so why not bike in the rain? As long as you have a decent slicker and goggles to prevent road spray from getting into your eyes there's really no reason not to bike year-round.

Thanks for the suggestions, Rob! (And the clarification.) After my own two-wheeled tour of Portland, I can say that a weekend getaway with bicycle in the city sounds like a great time.

A trip to Portland via Amtrak with bicycle for exploring the city is a great get away trip for afew days. stay at one of the International Hostels either in the Hawthorne or Northeast districts, or at the Bluebird guest house in Hawthorne, all of which are very bicycle friendly, and you stay right in town for much less money, and it's part of the adventure!
