Thank you to everyone who rode last Friday on F5 Bike to Work Day! We hope you enjoyed your trip to work on two wheels during brisk (but dry!) morning weather.
More than 16,000 people rode last Friday and stopped by Cascade’s 43 official commute stations around the Puget Sound region. Many energetic riders turned out for a live outdoor radio broadcast at KEXP studios followed by a fun and inspiring ride and rally with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, elected officials, and Cascade staff. Cascade got the Ballard Street Party started with live music from KEXP, test rides on a conference bike from Dutch Bicycle Company, arts and crafts in the kids’ corner, a bike fashion show and much more near Bergen Place Park.
The positive energy swirling around F5 Bike to Work Day was palpable; I’ve never had so many fellow riders greet me with a friendly ‘good morning’ on my ride to work. I hope you felt the same positive energy and support on your ride Friday morning. Take a look at some of the photos from Bike to Work Day here.
Now that you’ve ridden on Bike to Work Day, consider making bicycling for transportation a habit. If you can’t ride every day, aim to ride once or twice a week. When taking short trips to run errands nearby, reach for your helmet and bicycle instead of your car keys or bus pass. You might surprise yourself with how much money you save, how energized you feel, and how much fun you have getting from point A to point B.

It was a great day.
I noticed the happy buzz too. It seems like it’s carrying over beyond just BTW day — am getting more friendly grins and hellos from both cyclists and pedestrians, especially on the trails.
We should do what motorcyclists do as a matter of “code” — acknowledge every other cyclist we see — with a little head nod or friendly eye contact.
Here near the Pierce County line, there just aren’t a lot of cyclists. So I try to acknowledge every cyclist I see, even across the roadway from me. (Remember Crocodile Dundee?) I also smile and greet just about every pedestrian I meet or pass on my route. And I throw up a hand in acknowledgement & thanks to just about every driver who yields at an intersection or crossing. Riding makes me smile. If I can make them smile, too, perhaps they’ll develop a better feeling about cyclists – and maybe even try biking themselves at some point.
