Our highlight of the week this time is something we hope will become the highlight of YOUR week as well-we are kicking off our summertime trail safety campaign. We’ll be rolling out some friendly reminders of how everyone can be a more respectful trail user in the form of colorful “Burma Shave” signs and on-trail stenciling. Look for these messages [and three more versions with different trail safety messages] all around Seattle this summer. This week, they will be near our Energizer station at UW.

In my experience in trying to walk on the Burke Gilman trail bikers are EXTREMELY inconsiderate. And I’m sorry to say it galls me to see your bike club post signs that say I shouldn’t be able to listen to music while I walk. Really? Why do bikers think it’s my job to be aware of them as they whiz by coming up behind me at 10-30 mph? They often come within inches of me with no warning.
When I’m driving in my car I have to respect the bike lanes, and when their is no bike lane I am expected to drive 10-20 mph behind them until I can safely pass. It’s incredible that bikers see no need to show the same respect for pedestrians.
As far as I can tell bikers seem to actually believe they should be offered absolute defference whether they are on a road, a highway, or a trail. No one else matters. They are the only people with rights apparently. Beyond ridiculous and absolutely hypocritical. Bike on the bike lanes on public roads and let me enjoy the trails. My taxes paid for both.
Hey Rjd,
We completely agree on courtesy from all users. The image above is *one* set in a series of four so far. Another sign set specifically addresses proximity and speed when passing on a bike.
It’s ALL our jobs to watch out and be mindful of each other’s safety on the trail, dog walkers, runners, people on bikes. Many folks out there are doing a great job at being courteous. Others, not so much. Rather than continuing the downward spiral of anger and disrespect, our hope is that we work toward recognizing and respecting each other as humans and fellow trail users.
Thanks for your comments and stop back later this week when we’ll share more of the signs in the campaign.

I use headphones turned low because the wind that gets in my ears is louder without headphones than with. If not I have to turn my head sideways periodically to hear anything… even if a car is coming. I do not hear my music around traffic because traffic sounds drown it out and I always hear bells and voices… now that my ears are protected from the wind. Maybe I have ears that stick out more than most but I’m safer with my headphones on… or at least I can hear better.
One word of consideration… riders close to pedestrians should go pedestrian speed on sidewalks or on crowded trails. It’s just a nice thing to do….
