Josh, while it may be legal to ride two abreast, I would be careful with the circumstances of riding that way. If you elected, for example, to back up traffic in order to have your chat, well, we will be disagreeing about your choice in that circumstance. Your behavior could be considered reckless by the car drivers if you ride two abreast in heavy traffic.

currently, it depends on the jurisdiction; BUT,...

those that don't will start to do so if they know the video is being shared on "social media" sites and/or with the local television station.

I had never thought about riding with a camera before, but the other day I was riding with my girlfriend and having a lovely chat- two abreast of course- and people were loosing their minds, making threats of every sort! I hate thinking that I need to "collect" evidence for such behavior, but I believe it makes a safer commute for all bicyclists when drivers know someone may be recording. But, begs the question- will cops even follow-up on the complaints of harassment or reckless endangerment?

I believe that helmet cameras are actually a deterrent to safety. If the cyclist relies on the camera afixed to his helmet as a means of recording vindicating evidence it begs the question; what about the one you never see? How far are you willing to go to encumber yourself in the name of safety?

How about a life vest for one of our many bridges? I mean, what if you go over and it's a car that has nudged you to your demise. Would it make for breathtaking footage at your memorial service? I have yet to see video footage from a bike that captures the 'beauty of our city' or for that matter empowers female cyclists, as you suggest.

Anecdotally, the idea that we can somehow protect ourselves by filming any aspect of our lives is supported by apocryphal stories of motorists gone wild. Getting a helmet camera to gain evidence of wrongdoing is the equivalent of loading a musket to fire at a retreating tank.

Life is short. Cycling is fun. If more gear makes you feel better, so be it. I would love to be able to ride in a full suit of armor with a handy flame thrower for those pesky drivers but on the whole, it's a lot more interesting to enjoy what the world has to offer without a nagging compulsion to provide evidence of someone else's wrongdoing.

Last December I was taking a 40 mph descent along the shoulder of a 4 lane hwy into Hemet, CA. A vehicle came over the fog line to crowd me. I filed a complaint with CHP and offered to send them the video clip, no follow up on CHP's part. :-(
