Mostly because it’s fun! Other reasons: stress reducer (best way to start & end your workday), saves money, keeps me happy/sane.
I bicycle for all sorts of reasons. It’s fun. It relieves stress. It’s healthy for me and healthy for the planet. It’s a statement against car culture. It’s what I do.
Lately, though, it’s beauty that’s been on my mind. I work in an office in downtown Bellevue. It’s a nice office, but it’s not beautiful. Neither is downtown Bellevue beautiful. On my bike commute, though, there’s always something beautiful. This morning there was the awesome double rainbow, and the way the air smelled as the rain began after a long dry spell. Some days it’s the sunrise or sunset as I ride across the I-90 bridge. Sometimes it’s kids playing in Judkins Park as their parents look on. Sometimes it’s something completely unexpected, but it’s always something.
Bicycling is the activity that reliably connects me with the experience of beauty.
Yeah, what Gene said! I also have a lot more control over my commute when I’m on my bike. I have alternatives and never have to worry about traffic. Then there’s also the connection you have with your environment when you ride. I’ve gotten to know other cyclists along my route and also some people who walk their dogs regularly. I usually stop and say hi and pet their dogs. Cycling keeps me connected to the world around me. In my car I don’t have that experience.
It’s a cheap way to get around. I haven’t had a personal vehicle for twelve years. I don’t miss buying gas, insurance or paying a monthly note.
Health, FUN, wealth, and the bonus — connecting with my community!
After 4 years commuting to work, library, shopping… I have never had a bad ride. Find one car driver to say that!
I have never wished to be rid of my bike. Never reached my destination agitated, angry, aggressive, shocked. Never pounded the handlebars (steering wheel), kicked the tires, or slammed the frame (doors). Again find one car driver that can say that.
I’ve never been ashamed of my bike and my son is proud to point me out as his mom ON THE BIKE.
There are no cons, zed, zero, none.
