One item you don't mention is the "smug" factor. I don't necessarily brag to my friends that I rode in the rain, but I do spend a few moments feeling superior. That's just part of the fun. And the truth is, with the right equipment, riding in the rain is never as bad as you think it will be.

Anne,

in my previous post i neglected to compliment you on the thoroughness of your article -- absolutely the best i've ever read on this topic; most articles leave out at least one, if not more, of the subjects you covered so well. this should be "flagged" for publishing every Fall.

thanks for all you're doing.

Reflective mud flaps/buddy flaps provide protection for your bike and you keeping grime off you and your drive train reducing wear and maintenance costs. The reflective aspect of the mud flaps enhance rear visibility(both day and night) and safety and the batteries never go dead!

@TonyJ, I have the same issue, though I admit to being a fair-weather rider for lots of reasons. A cycle cap under a helmet or a helmet with a decent brim does help.

Any suggestions on how to ride in the rain with prescription eyeglasses? The few times I've done it my lenses became so difficult to see through that I had to stop and get on a bus. This one problem keeps me off my bike if there's even a hint of rain in the air.

2. Staying Warm -- a "winter" helmet cover is waterproof and will reduce head heat loss.

I gave my bike so much tlc this weekend to get ready for the rain riding. I put my fenders back on, cleaned my rims with rubbing alcohol and scrubbed every nook and cranny with a toothbrush. She looks and feels like new. I <3 her.
