SLIDESHOW: Rain does not deter happy Bike to Work riders!

Friday, May 17th, 2013 by

It was grey and rainy this morning but that didn’t deter thousands of people from ditching their cars to ride their bikes to work for the annual F5 Bike to Work Day.  Commute stations all over the region were buzzing, some even reported a record number of visitors!

We met people who were riding to work for the very first time today while others, familiar with the swag and goodies at the dozens of  commute stations, embarked on a city-wide search for the best commute station offerings. Rumor has it that the hosts of one DIY station slaved away in the kitchen to offer homemade doughnuts! We sure are feeling the bike love today.  And it’s not over yet! Come on down to Via6 for the official Bike to Work Day After Party. Hosted by Via6 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m., bring in the weekend with bites and beverages from Tom Douglas Restaurants, tunes from KEXP DJ Greg Vandy, prizes and tours of ViaBike and Via6 apartments.

Imagine every day is just like Bike to Work Day

Spring is for new beginnings and Bike Month motivates thousands of people to dust off their bikes and start bike commuting.

Last May, 10,656 people actively logged their bike trips during our month-long Group Health Commute Challenge. By biking to work for one month, we collectively logged 1.5 million miles, burned well over 74 million calories, and saved almost 1.5 million pounds of CO2. Wow!

On F5 Bike to Work Day alone, 20,000 cyclists packing the roads, bridges and trails, presenting an inspiring vision for what the region can look like in the future.

Bike to School 2013 will be Wednesday, May 8, and Bike to Work Day 2013 will be Friday, May 17.

More bicyclists mean safer streets, healthier people, cleaner air and more livable communities.  Help us inspire thousands of people to give bike commuting a try, and come ride with us in May! http://www.cascade.org/give

Make every day Bike to Work Day

A commuter fuels up on coffee and donuts at a DIY station on Capitol Hill

Thank you to everyone who rode last Friday on F5 Bike to Work Day! We hope you enjoyed your trip to work on two wheels during brisk (but dry!) morning weather.

More than 16,000 people rode last Friday and stopped by Cascade’s 43 official commute stations around the Puget Sound region. Many energetic riders turned out for a live outdoor radio broadcast at KEXP studios followed by a fun and inspiring ride and rally with Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn, elected officials, and Cascade staff. Cascade got the Ballard Street Party started with live music from KEXP, test rides on a  conference bike from Dutch Bicycle Company, arts and crafts in the kids’ corner, a bike fashion show and much more near Bergen Place Park.

The positive energy swirling around F5 Bike to Work Day was palpable; I’ve never had so many fellow riders greet me with a friendly ‘good morning’ on my ride to work. I hope you felt the same positive energy and support on your ride Friday morning. Take a look at some of the photos from Bike to Work Day here.

Now that you’ve ridden on Bike to Work Day, consider making bicycling for transportation a habit. If you can’t ride every day, aim to ride once or twice a week. When taking short trips to run errands nearby, reach for your helmet and bicycle instead of your car keys or bus pass. You might surprise yourself  with how much money you save, how energized you feel, and how much fun you have getting from point A to point B.
