STP is sold out!

Thursday, February 14th, 2013 by

I hate to break your heart like this on Valentine’s Day, but the 2013 Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic is now sold out.

Don’t despair! We have some options:

Trade your time for a bib

First, you can start volunteering to earn a spot. Volunteers who clock 24 hours with us can earn registrations for STP (and our other events, too). Helping with Cascade events or in the office is a great way to get involved in your community and keep Cascade running smoothly. Email Diana Larson for information about our volunteer opportunities.

Group Health Fitness Network has spots

UPDATE: Group Health tickets are sold out!

The title sponsor Group Health has reserved entries for Group Health staff and members.  Please visit www.GroupHealthFitnessNetwork.com for more information.

Bid for registrations on eBay and support a great cause

[2/20 update] A limited amount of ten Group Health Seattle to Portland Bicycle Classic registrations will be up for auction on eBay. The first auctions will be open on Monday, March 11 at 12:01 p.m. We’ll continue opening two auctions per week with bidding on the final registrations closing in mid-April.

All eBay auction winners will receive a coveted low bib number. We’re also throwing in free food and beverages at the Finish Line Festival in Portland. Plus, the amount of any amount beyond the standard online registration fee is a tax-deductible donation to the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation, so you can feel good about spending a few extra bucks.

Or, take a completely different route…

Ride to Bellingham
June  29

Ride in June and ride for a reason! The World Bicycle Relief Red-Bell 100 is a fully-supported century on low-traffic road and trail riding through beautiful rural countryside. The best part, though, is that you’ll be pedaling in support of two great organizations: Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation and World Bicycle Relief.

Cascade’s youth programming reaches 25,000 local kids per year! World Bicycle Relief just distributed their 90,000th lifechanging transport style bicycle in Africa this year. This exciting partnership and ride offers participants a true way to affect direct change though their support and giving. And, you get a jersey.

Don’t stop there, ride all the way to Vancouver
Aug. 17 – 18

In August, we’re heading to Vancouver for the RSVP. If you’re not familiar with this ride, it’s a two-day event from Seattle to Vancouver, with a stop-over in Bellingham. The Friday/Saturday event is closed, but we still have spots open for Saturday/Sunday. Come Ride from Seattle to Vancouver, BC and Party with us!

The heck with it all, go touring

From Aug. 3 – 10, it’s Pines to Vines on the 15th annual Ride Around Washington. RAW is a week-long, fully-supported camping tour produced for cyclists, by cyclists. The RAW Committee is proud of the variety and beauty of cycling routes in every corner Washington.

Your bags are transported from campsite to campsite, so you can ride light. Meals, showers and road support are part of the deal. This tour is limited to 250, so get on it before it’s sold out.

Or, take it a bit further afield with our Regional Club Tours. We’re going to Central California, Central Washington, Oregon and more.

And if you REALLY want to get away, our upcoming International Tours are heading to Japan, Czech Republic, India, Chile, Argentina and Vietnam.

Ultraskater completes third RSVP

Thursday, August 23rd, 2012 by

It was still dark outside and the RSVP 2 start line hadn’t even opened yet but James Peters was all set to head out on his third Ride from Seattle to Vancouver and Party event. Carrying nothing but a small camelback and his skateboard, Peters said this was the most minimalist way he has travelled yet.

Peters, 44, has completed six Seattle-to-Portland Classics and now, three RSVP events and all of them on a skateboard.

“Skateboarding is what I do,” Peters said. “I’m a big advocate for transportation by skateboard.”

Peters, a software quality assurance manager, said he skates to work and would like to see skateboarding become recognized as a legitimate form of transportation.

“Police in Seattle are tolerant but there are other cities like Portland where there are actual laws in place that allow skateboarding on roads,” Peters said. “I’d like to see that here. So many kids already want to go out and skateboard. It ‘s a great to get off the couch and get out and use alternative transportation.”

In the meantime, Peters will continue to lead by example, using his skateboard as his main mode of transportation and recreation.  He not only helped pioneer long-distance skateboarding back in 1999, he’s also in the Guinness World Records book for farthest distance traveled by skateboard in a 24-hour-period.
