Imagine every girl and boy who wants to ride bikes gets a chance to grab the handlebars

Thursday, December 20th, 2012 by

Last year, the Cascade Bicycle Club Education Foundation took 250 disadvantaged urban kids on day-long mountain-biking adventures with Trips for Kids. On their adventures, kids learned trail etiquette, rules of riding, bike skills and an appreciation for the environment.

Hundreds more participated in our summer camps and classes.

Your gift helps give kids the opportunity to get outside mountain biking with Trips for Kids.  Let’s give every girl and boy a chance to grab life by the handlebars! http://www.cascade.org/give

Successful new Safe Routes to School bike program at Aki Kurose

This fall,  SDOT kicked off a new Safe Routes to School program at Aki Kurose Middle School with great success.  The program, a six-week after-school bike club for Aki students, focused on bicycle maintenance and safe urban riding skills.

Students borrowed bicycles from Bike Works, and decorated helmets donated by Cascade Bicycle Club, adding a little individual flare with stenciled names and reflective stickers.

During the course of the program, students learned how to patch inner tubes, how to ride safely, and plan routes on a city bicycle map.

After weeks of skills and drills, students were ready for a ride, and  along with adult leaders, they formed a bicycle train and rode around the nearby park.

SDOT reports that both students and adult members are anxious for the spring club to begin!

Greenways are going places

Thursday, October 25th, 2012 by

Sometime in September, I started noticing changes happening on 39th Ave. NE. First, some ramps were being built to connect to the Burke-Gilman Trail. Then the intersection was popped out for safer pedestrian crossings. And then concrete islands appeared on 65th St. to help with safer crossings. ‘Lo and behold, folks, a new neighborhood greenway is well on the way!

This Friday, Oct 26, the 39th Ave. Greenway is opening to great fanfare. And costumes. And kids on bikes. And donuts!

From the Wedgwood Community Council:

While not all of the painting and striping will likely be completed in time for the ribbon cutting, that won’t stop us from having fun.  There will be a ribbon cutting, refreshments, and festivities at the greenway’s connection to the Burke (39th Ave NE & NE 52nd Street) beginning at 8 a.m!  The Thornton Creek Elementary south bike train will depart around 8:45 a.m. in the full glory of their Halloween costumes. You can see the full invitation HERE.

Join us there to celebrate and ride Seattle’s newest greenway!

Then on Sunday, join us for a fun family bike ride along the Ballard Greenway. The ride meets at the Ballard Commons at 10 a.m. The ride is organized by Cascade ride leaders and greenway aficionados Cathy Tuttle and Robin Randels.

The group will first explore the west side of the Greenway to see how it links to the Burke-Gilman Trail, then pass the Ballard Library to explore the east side of the Greenway before returning to the Ballard Commons and on to the Ballard Farmer’s Market.

Volunteers from Ballard Greenways, including local bike advocate (and recent ALI graduate) Shannon Koller, will be on hand to answer questions about the project. At approximately two miles, the route is short enough to accommodate our younger family members. You will encounter gentle hills, roundabouts, marked and unmarked intersections, uneven and cracked pavement, traffic lights and a bike lane. This presents an opportunity to teach our emerging urban cyclists about how to successfully navigate these elements in a supportive and fun environment.

Take a Kid MTB Day 2012: a sunny success

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012 by

Summer weather lingered for yet another weekend as hundreds of kids, parents and volunteers headed to Duthie Hill Park in Issaquah, Wash. for the seventh annual Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day.

Sponsored by Cascade Bicycle Club and the Evergreen Bike Alliance, Take a Kid Mountain Biking Day is a celebration that strives to connect kids with the natural world through riding mountain bikes.

This year’s event included lots of trail riding, an obstacle course for the little ones, music, a barbecue, prizes and a spectacular jump show by local and pro riders.

“The jump show was amazing,” raved Kat Sweet, Cascade’s Youth Program Manager. “Pro rider Phil Sundbaum was throwing huge x-up back flips along with local shredders, Travis Erikson, Jon Steinbis and our Cascade Dirt Camp coaches and junior mentors.”

With not even as much as a threat of rain in the weather forecast, the event drew 180 kids, 80 parents and 40 volunteers.

“I want to thank all of the amazing people dedicated to our sport who came out to support the future generations of shredders,” said Sweet.
